Thanksgiving at Christmas

God of our hearts, who comes to us
in the wisdom of the ancients
and in the innocence of a new-born child,
we come to you in thanksgiving
on this Christmas Day.

We thank you for Jesus:
for the Way of love that he showed us,
and walked himself.

We thank you for the stories of his birth,
that charm us as children
and impart deeper lessons when we grow up.

We thank you for all the joy
and generosity of Christmas-time;
for its good fellowship and its good food –
if we are fortunate enough to have some.

We thank you for the season’s myth and magic,
antidotes to our world-weariness and cynicism.
But remind us of our duty to those who suffer
and grieve on this Christmas Day.

God of our inmost hearts
and of the starry heavens above,
make of us your loving children,
true sisters and brothers of Jesus,
and members of that new humanity
of which he was the firstborn.

So may we enter your Kingdom
and be messengers of your peace.

Amen.
