Why I am a Unitarian
I joined the Unitarians at a point that when I was feeling somewhat bruised from my previous experience of religion and also feeling a little lost in life. I suppose I was giving faith a final chance.
A few months before, someone had said to me “You sound like a Unitarian!” so I thought I should investigate this church which I’d barely even heard of.
Stepping through the door for the first time felt like a risk, but I am so glad that I found the courage to do it!
I think I came first to a Unitarian Service because I was interested in Unitarian beliefs. Beliefs are still important to me, but they are not why I stayed. I stayed because of the community I found and the values we share.
For some, Unitarianism centres on particular beliefs regarding God and Jesus – but I have found so much more than that within our faith. For me, Unitarianism mixes religion, a philosophy, and a way of life. It shapes and informs the way I live. It accepts me with my faith and my doubts. It provides me with friends and community. It takes me as I am but encourages me to do better.
I came to love our people, our churches, and our whole Unitarian movement.
Sometimes I tell people “I don’t know how I would’ve lived I hadn’t found the Unitarians”. I’m sure I would’ve survived, but it wouldn’t be the fulfilling life I have now.
Having found such a blessing, it was natural for me to want to share it with others. We are a too well-kept secret! If we don’t share our message then we deny others the opportunity to share in what we have found.
Are we perfect? No! Our Unitarian movement has its flaws and faults. Yet it’s my faith, my church, my home. It is who I am and what I am called to be in this life.
I’m proud to call myself a Unitarian!
