As the deer is drawn to water

After Psalm 42
Tune: Ar Hyd y Nos (All Through the Night)

As the deer is drawn to water,
My soul to God.
Yet in all the pain and slaughter
Where is my God?
When, the holy days observing,
We meet darkness undeserving,
Still we struggle on, preserving
Our faith in God.

When the billows close above me,
I cry to God.
When it seems that none can love me,
I cry to God.
When the world seems harsh and rotten,
Fate is cruel and misbegotten,
Joyful dreams are long forgotten,
I cry to God.

Loving kindness given daily
is God’s command.
Spirit’s song in darkest night time
holds out a hand.
Though the enemy oppress me,
Politics and commerce stress me,
Let Your spirit yet possess me.
Strong may we stand.
